About ITEP Course
The Integrated Teacher Education Programme (ITEP) is a pioneering initiative introduced by the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) in alignment with the recommendations of India’s National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. NEP 2020 envisions a transformative reform of India’s education system with a strong focus on strengthening teacher education and improving the quality of teaching across all levels. Recognizing teachers as the foundation of a progressive education system, the policy promotes an integrated, multidisciplinary, and professional approach to teacher preparation.
ITEP is a four-year integrated programme designed for students aspiring to build a successful career in teaching. The programme combines general education (B.A. or B.Sc.) with professional teacher education (B.Ed.), enabling future educators to develop subject knowledge and pedagogical skills simultaneously. It prepares teachers for foundational, preparatory, middle, and secondary school levels. As outlined in NEP 2020, by the year 2030, the minimum qualification for teaching will be a four-year integrated B.Ed. degree offered by multidisciplinary higher education institutions.
One of the major objectives of ITEP is to overcome the limitations of fragmented teacher education systems by establishing a unified and high-quality framework for teacher preparation. The programme focuses on developing competent, reflective, ethical, and innovative educators capable of meeting the educational needs of 21st-century learners. The curriculum emphasizes foundational literacy and numeracy, inclusive education, multilingual learning, digital literacy, experiential pedagogy, value-based education, and Indian knowledge systems in accordance with the vision of NEP 2020.
ITEP also includes extensive field engagement, school internships, practical teaching experience, and community interaction, helping prospective teachers gain real-world classroom exposure and professional confidence. Through a balanced integration of academic learning and teacher training, the programme aims to enhance the quality, credibility, and attractiveness of teacher education in India.
